Is it true that baby oil can be used to kill ear mites in cats?

  1. It doesn't kill the mites but it makes it a lot easier to remove them. The mites stick to the oil on the end of a cotton swab (Q-tip) and you can clean the cat's ear much easier this way. Water might just force them to drop deeper into the cat's ears - and dry is pretty painful.

    To actually kill the mites you need a special solution that you can get from your vet or the pet store. You squirt this into the ear, rub it around and let it set for a short time. Then you get out the swabs and start digging.

    The way I see it, removing them is just as good as killing them, so I just go for the baby oil technique. (Mineral oil will work too...it's almost the same thing.)

  2. my vet told us to use mineral oil, on a cotton swab and swab the infected ears.  it does seem to work.
