  1. All living things respire. They take in oxygen and give out oxygen as well as a significant amount of carbon dioxide.

Plants [and plant-like protists] however, possess chlorophyll. This allows the plant to photosynthesise. During the process, they take in carbon dioxide, reducing the amount in the atmosphere. They release oxygen. This is good for the environment, as trees help to replenish the oxygen supply in the atmosphere, as well as reduce CO2.

However, sunlight is needed for photosynthesis. Therefore, in truth, banyan trees, all trees, respire in the night without photosynthesis. Therefore, sitting under a tree at night would lead to competition for oxygen. That's why you shouldn't sleep with a plant in your room at night.

Therefore, I think that it is good for yogis to sit under the tree during the day for the oxygen, but unhealthy at night.

  2. Yes.

    As all green plants do.

  3. All plants produce oxygen.  It's a byproduct of photosynthesis.  Banyan trees have a lot of leaves, so they make a lot of oxygen.
