Is it true that carrots are bio-engineered?

meaning they arent natural "vegetables", in other words, at one point there was no carrots, then there were carrots that had been specifically grown into the form and "vegetable" it is today. I am not talking about being grown with engineered strains, etc, I am talking about creating a vegetable out of nothing, then naming it a carrot and selling it as a vegetable.
