Is it true that cats only pur around humans and that it relives humans stress around them?

I have heard that when a cat purs around a human that it relives stress i want to know if this is true . If its not what does a cat do to relive stress from humans surronding them?And is it true also that cats only pur around humans and if thiers any other intristing facts you know about cats feel free to put them down also thanks alot .

my cats always come up and rub their faces on me and then start purring.  also they purr when they're about to go to sleep.  they purr when they're happy, i no that for sure.  i can tell when my little girl's happy and my big boy too.  but i think the whole relieving stress is just a myth because after my cats get stressed out by the dogs they just look mean and whip their tales.
