it wasnt allowed until 1998 when an amendment was made to the constitution.it previously wasnt allowed due to the influence of the catholic church.in the same referendum the territorial clame on northern ireland was removed

up to 20 years or so ago, you could not get a divorce. But we had a regferendum, and now you can.
