My mother told me this, and I'm not really sure it's true or not, but I've been noticing my dog, a 7 month old labrador, has been eating grass for a while, and today I noticed she vomited a few hours after her breakfast.I'm wondering if it's a sign of any health problems, and if they do eat grass when they're stomach is upset, why do they do it? I'm a little worried about her...

  1. Yes it's true. They eat grass to vomit out whatever is bugging them in their stomach.

  2. Sometimes they eat grass if they are sick but most of the time young dogs will eat anything they can get into. It's most likely that your dog ate grass that was contaminated or something. This is gross but I know someone who had a dog that ate their grass and it turned out to have rat pee on it and it made their dogs ill and one of them died.(it was weak already) But the others lived. Good luck with your dog!

  3. Dogs will eat grass to induce vomiting or to ease an upset stomach.  Our oldest Weimaraner has a very sensitive stomach and when she's having an issue, she will wake me up several times during the night to go outside and eat grass.  Oddly enough, she doesn't usually vomit, but the grass definitely makes its way through by the next morning.  Makes for a rough night, but it makes her feel better.  Our Vizsla puppy has been eating grass since we brought her home last November.  She likes to graze like a goat - that's why she has the nickname Nanny Wigglebutt.  She seriously eats grass every time she goes outside.  I say she likes salad!

I hope you find out what's going on with your puppy.

  4. yes it is very true!

see your vet and tell him/her the whole story, and see if shes sick or not!

  5. It is true that dogs eat grass when their stomach is upset. Maybe they ate something bad and are trying to vomit by eating grass. However, I have read that a small percentage of dogs actually like the taste of grass. These dogs will eat grass even though there is nothing wrong with them. I used to worry because when I first adopted my dog I noticed that she loved to eat grass. I brought her to the vet because I thought there was something wrong with her and he told me the something that I read. However, if you are unsure don't take a chance. A quick trip to the vet is definitely worth it.

  6. I'm not sure why they do it exactly, but all the dogs I've had do this when they have an upset tummy.

  7. This is not an issue at all! Dogs unlike people can actually use their appendix, which after they learn to use it they enjoy very much. All of my cats and dogs enjoy going outside and ripping up the back yard, as long as it keeps them happy i suppose i can deal with a patchy lawn! sometimes if they eat something that makes their stomach upset they will eat grass which can make them throw up, its just like a natural home remedy. The way the body digests the grass creates a natural substance for their bellies, so dont try to stop her or be worried, it is so natural!

  8. Yes, it is true they eat grass when they have an upset tummy.  My dogs have always done it - the last one at my parents is 13 so I wouldn't worry too much.

  9. Nope, As far as I know dogs eat grass to get rid of bad things, when they are sick.

  10. It's perfectly normal for dogs to eat grass.

They tend to do it to relieve a build up of digestive juices that accumulate when the stomach is empty, to help alleviate this you can try feeding 2 or 3 smaller meals a day , instead of 1 or 2 larger meals.

They also eat grass if their diet is lacking in roughage.

The only time you need to worry about your dog eating grass is if it has been sprayed with any fertilisers, or when they vomit grass it contains blood, other wise don't worry.

  13. It's good for them to eat when stomach is sick...but my dog doesn't. I don't even think she see's grass that way.
