a friend of mine told me every car has platinum in the muffler and that I could make like $500 just off of it. Is that really true or is he pulling my leg? I was thinking about scrapping the car for like $200-$300 but if I can add an extra $500 to that by ripping out the muffler I wouldnt mind at all.

  1. NO. That's not true. The precious metals are located in the catalytic converters. Platinum and palladium are used to react with exhaust gases to scrub off pollutants.

  2. It's in the catalytic converter and it's not worth anywhere near $500. Some cars recently have added palladium as well.

  3. the cats where the money is.

  4. Not every car has it.  Some older models don't have it.

  5. There are no rare earth elements in your muffler. It's the catalytic converters that the scrap dealers want.

A Hyundai dealer in Montreal found that out. Came into work on Monday morning to find that all the catalytic converters were missing from his new cars on the lot. He now stores the catalytic converters inside his shop until the cars are sold.

  6. No! It's in the catalytic converter.

  7. you mean cadalitic convertor? it does have some prescious metal in it, but it also has poison so know what your doing.

heres a link that names materials in it http://www.catalytic-converter-recycling...

  8. Not the muffler. The catalytic converter is what it is in. Yes, it is there and that is why thieves steal them off cars.

  9. It is not the muffler, but the catalytic converter that has platinum in it.

The metal recycler prices I have found for scrap converters ranges from a low of $30.00 to a high of $205.00. To get the high end price you need to have it from an exotic car like a Ferrari, or Lamborghini.

So your friend is way over estimating the value.

  10. Not the Muffler, the catylitic converter.

It is illegel to drive a car without the cat and it would not pass inspection or emissions with out it.

If you take it off, the areas you drive in will have toxic chemicals coming out of the exhaust that can kill people who breathe it.
