Question:

Is it true that gin is more of a depressant than any other alcohol?

I'm a huge fan of Bombay Sapphire gin and drink a glass or two every night. Just curious to know if it is a depressant or just a myth.

Plus also can anyone recommend another gin over Bombay? I don't like Gorgan's.

  1. No more than any other drink with the same amount of alcohol. If you like the flavor of Bomby gin, stick with it. Personally, I prefer good brandy or grappa.

  2. hi, no it is not any more of a depressant, ALL acohol is depressant. one or two glasses EVERY night? however is maybe on the way to developing tolerance and a habit.

try Tanqueray for a nice light flavour, the dutch gins are reputed to be the best, lemon, sloe, and other bases, a nice change from the juniper flavour:-)

Pimms No1 cup is gin based and makes a nice long drink with tonic.

vickers and gordons are rather nasty, heavy almost perfumed with juniper.

it would be worth seeing if the Suntory brand has a gin in the range, they copied a lot of other spirits and seemed to do a good job.

if you are sad or worried then any alcoholic beverage will add to that state, not remove, unless oblivion is acheived, and that is a baaad look!

  3. Alcohol is alcohol.  It is a depressant.

  4. Depends on how you are feeling at the moment. Any type of alcohol can be a depressent if consumed in large quantities and in a routine manner, seek pleasure from other things, not drugs or alcohol.

  5. No--I have been drinking Tanqueray and dreaming of my night owl under the full moon;-)

  6. Both Gin and Vodka are two things I can't handle! Just the smell turns my stomach, it's like rubbing alcohol. Funny thing is I can drink rum or tequila and I am fine....Gin or Vodka SICK, SICK, SICK! So, no, it doesn't really make me depressed, it just makes me ill, though puking my guts out isn't exactly a fun thing either!

  7. Gin, like all alcohol, is considered a depressant.  Gin also contains juniper berries (among other things) which have a mild psychedelic alkaloid in them.  If you notice that gin gives you a feeling that is different from other alcohols, this may be why.  Note that the psychedelic effect is very mild and you would have to drink A LOT to really notice the .psychedelic effect.

  9. Gin is very interesting it is a lover and you need to treat it very  well to make it love you back I too also have a martini (or with tonic) at night I don't feel more depressed than not i don't know if this answers your question because also I know(As the first answer mentioned)"It Is a depressant" I guess I feel a bit more sleepy At that particular time but it is a lovely drink, I have had mine already and not very sleepy. I feel terrific

Somebody mentioned Slow Gin? that stuff will make you depressed

  10. the toaster is absolutely right...

depressants don't make people depressed.. there are suppressants (alcohal, THC, etc) and stimulants (narcotic, dopamines, etc) that either supress or stimulate activity in the brain

god it's like everybody and their mum.. is an idiot who thinks it about being sad or happy

  11. yeah, i think it is actually more of a depressant..

  12. yeah I've always found that an interesting idea because as a herbalist, the herbs in Bombay Sapphire gin (and indeed any gin) are used for their uplifting qualities.

And as a gin-lover, I've never noticed that it has a depressant effect at all. Emotionally or CNS.

So I personally conclude that it's a myth.

On the other hand, hops, found in beer, is considered an emotional depressant in herbal medicine...

  13. I would say any alcohol is a depressant!

  14. what ever you drink is a depressant it really doesn't matter but if you bear down and compare them all yes your right it is also the nastiest if i had a word in it

  15. YES it makes you cry

  16. I like what Toaster said,  I've heard people say alcohol causes depression because it is a depressant.  Depression is an emotion,  depressants work on your nervous system and often make one feel better, for a while at least.  Gin is no different than any other liquors in that respect.  That being said,  I really like gin....I find Seagram's to be pretty good for  a lower price than Bombay or Tanqueray.

  17. based on the fact that gin is from juniper berries...the opposite is true.--juniper berries are used to help ease depression.  But, unfortunately, as you know...alcohol is a depressant regardless of the base--vodka, rum etc.  Drinking is not a pick me up--although at first it may seem to be.

  18. Sloe gin is good and yes it is as they say the 'Mothers Ruin'

  19. all alcohol is a depressant

  20. It depends on the person - some people find that Gin makes them feel depressed.  Others may find other spirits makes them feel depresssed.

I used to feel depressed if I drank Port.

  21. Gin makes me depressed because its so disgusting. I think its the worst tasting liquor. I cant see how people drink that c**p.

  22. Yes, gin's got a kick.  If I'm tired when I first go out, I'll get a Bombay Sapphire martini straight up with olives.  Like they say, it's alcohol and still a depressant, but the herbs infused in there are kinda special.  As an alternative to Bombay, I've recently found that Beefeater's is pretty darned good.

  23. alcohol is alcohol. 1 oz of 100 proof from potates is same as 1 zo 100 proof from grapes.

  24. Alcohol is a depressant.  The type doesn't matter.

The fact that gin is distilled from juniper berries caused me to act much crazier that on any other spirit that I  drank as a bartender for 30 years.

My favorite has always been Beefeather's Gin.

It was popular in the 60's and early 70's before the big Tanqueray ad campaigns put it on the sidelines.

It is quite a bit dryer in taste that either Tanqueray or Bombay.

I liked it on the rocks or mixed with soda water and a twist.  I called that a dietetic gin buck.

A regular gin buck is gin, ginger ale, and a wedge of lemon, which is also very good.

  25. try original Dutch gin

  26. Alcohol is a depressant.

That means ALL alcohol.  Beer, wine, liquor...whatever.

There isn't one alcohol that is moreso than the other.

  27. I love Saphire.  Alcohol is a depressant but the properties of gin shouldn't make it more of one than any other alcohol of similar proof(alcohol content)  The booze with the highest proof will have the most depressing effect Most gins are 80 proof not different then most vodkas, bourbons, and other hard liquors.

  28. I think it depends on the individual because they say RUM makes people violent but i know alot of people that drink it and are not violent so yeh it all depends on the person.

Another great Gin to sip on is Vickers.

  29. in the times of expressionism (art), gin was introduced to France and theirs quite a few artworks depicting skinny homeless people dieing in the street, mothers mistreating their children and people doing weird things like eating food off the dirty street. i think any preconceptions of it's depressing ability came from this time. it was cheaper than any spirit at the time so the lower class people where the main customers, and because it was stronger than ale/beer people could get much much more drunk off it, whereas beer needs a big stomach to get that drunk.

  30. Depressant doesn't mean "causes depression."  Alcohol is called a depressant because it's a central nervous system depressant.  While alcohol does have a habit of making people depressed, it's drug classification is unrelated.  I don't know anything about gin being more depressing than other alcoholic drinks.  It wouldn't seem to make sense seeing as they all contain the same drug.  Still, in my experience, the depressing effects of alcohol tend to occur more often when I'm coming down from a strong buzz that came on quick.  Being hard liquor, I think gin has a greater chance of doing this than wine or beer.

  31. As for gin being THE depressant, I would think that award would go to everclear or Ouzo.
