Is it true that global warming is not happening?

Just recently i read from daily times that there is nothing to worry about global warning as this is a natural process, but how can you explain the disappearing island caused by melting glaciers and everything? Just asking.

  1. Yes, it's true it's NOT happening. It's a fraud perpetrated by that lying liberal nutcase fat porker hypocrite, Al Gore.

    Please read: http://common-sense-conservative.com/?p=...

  2. NO IT'S NOT TRUE !!

If it were so true. Then Al Gore should be ask the question. Why are you flying all over the United States preaching this in your  jet instead of driving?

  3. This is a long and complicated issue, so I'll break it into chunks.

Is the Earth warming *right now*? No, it is not. For some reason the Earth is in a cooling trend right now. It started in 1998 and will probably end soon, and may be related to the sun's current low-output Solar Cycle.

But you probably mean, "Over all, is global warming happening or not, and how severe is it?"

That's a different matter entirely. We are currently in what is called an interglacial period - a length of time between ice ages. Ice Ages, incidentally, have been happening off and on for several hundred thousand years (I don't know whether it's longer than that, but call it a hundred thousand years and you're close). This is a good thing - crops grow better and the weather is warmer during interglacial periods. The question is, has the Earth gotten warm enough that we will soon be in trouble, or what?

And the answer is, we don't have enough information.

"But wait!" ten thousand other Yahoo! answerers cry in anguish. "What about Gore? And the United Nations committees on climate change? And the media? And carbon dioxide?"

We still don't have enough information. Gore may be right - the jury's still out, as it were, since we'll only know in twenty years or so whether he is right about global warming - but we do know that many of his arguments are dead wrong. He said that Carbon Dioxide was a terrible greenhouse gas. Then he said that as Carbon Dioxide goes up, so does the average global temperature. Then he said that as the polar ice caps melt, the ocean will rise. Then he said that hurricanes and storms caused by climate change have already devastated people and polar bears.

Okay, point by point: Carbon Dioxide is a greenhouse gas. This is true. But it is also not a very good one compared with water, and water vapor is everywhere except where it is very cold. This means that in most places, any effect that CO2 might have is outstripped by the efficiency of the water nearby, so that the CO2 effect is very low in comparison.

The study showing that as CO2 rises, temperature does to, has come under quite a bit of criticism. The team that did that study (Richard Mann and others) estimated a lot of their data using a computer algorithm which they refused to release for a long time. It turns out that the algorithm seems to be good at exaggerating temperatures to be colder than they actually were - so if it's 70 degrees outside right now, the algorithm will look at the data it has and will decide that the "real" temperature is 68 degrees. If it is 70 degrees tomorrow, you will say that the temperature hasn't changed, but Mann's algorithm will say "Look! It's getting warmer!"

It's more complicated than that, but that's the effect. Basically, when you stick a thermometer in a field in 1950, it will say something, and when you check the thermometer in 2005 after a city has grown up around it, it will say something higher - but it isn't clear whether the area has actually warmed due to global warming or due to the fact that now you have pavement under the thermometer. Richard Mann's algorithm was terrible at taking this sort of thing into account.

Polar ice caps, if they melt, will not cause the sort of horrible ocean rises that Gore says. Ice floats; when it melts in a glass of water, the water level remains the same. Only land-based ice can really raise the sea level by melting, and there is quite a bit of evidence that it is doing quite well. One report I saw said that the arctic ice is as thick now (due to the particularly cold winter) as it was in 1970. In other words, I don't think we need to worry about it any time soon.

Gore said some stuff about polar bears dying due to global warming, although it was untrue enough that I really hope he's just bad at checking sources because the alternative is that he deliberately lied. The study he cited said that a bad storm had drowned seven polar bears. Mr. Gore said that global warming was melting ice so that bears would drown, and it had a cute sad little animation of a swimming polar bear. Please note, a storm does not equal global warming; the study he cites as "evidence" completely contradicts what Gore actually says.

As for the IPCC, the United Nations International Panel for Climate Change - well, even they acknowledged in a recent report that the earth appears to be in a cooling period and has been since either 1998 or 2002 depending on who you believe. But the U.N. is not very good at doing quality science. The IPCC made up a report a few years ago, talking about global warming, and cautioning readers that some of this was speculative and a lot of it was guesswork. The U.N. summary took out all that hedging and made it sound like doomsday - "nations must take action immediately," blah blah blah - even though the *actual report* was not actually very certain about some of the information it had, and tried to warn its readers about this.

Currently, the media has this problem where they need to sell papers in order to make money, and they've found that negative stuff and guilty stuff works wonders. So they're trumping up global warming. In five year's they'll be going on about the dangers of the avian flu or recommending that we get rid of Free Speech because somebody in another country got offended. (You think this is sarcasm? Unfortunately, no. Canada's British Columbia is thinking of charging a man with hate speech for a well-researched opinion article on European demographics and culture, available at http://www.macleans.ca/article.jsp?conte... If Gore is wrong, then in ten or fifteen years the papers will be happy to throw him to the sharks and say, "Oh, don't worry - we were against this global warming nonsense all along."

I'm not giving an opinion either way, incidentally; it's just that both sides have good points, but the pro-global-warming side has a lot of nonsense that they're trying to pass off as "science" or "scientific consensus" when there is actually still a lot of debate about how accurate the data is and how much the media has distorted the issue. And there doesn't seem to be much doubt that, for the past few years at least, the Earth has been cooling.

  4. Everything changes with time, even the Sun. To say that the Earth remains the same is poppycock. Our Planet warms up due to intense sunspot activity, and cools due to a quite time on the sun when this activity is nil.

  5. No Its not true. Global warming is surely happening. We cant prove or feel it as its a slow process. But after the earth gets damaged it would be the result of global warming only.

  6. I don't mean to rain on your parade, but if the island that you are referring to is Lohachara, then you are one of those who fell prey to a desperate hoax (even Fox News fell for it).

"The pro-global warming BBC reported that "rising seas, caused by global warming have for the first time washed an inhabited island of the face of the earth."

According to BBC, "The obliteration of Lohachara island, in India's part of the Sundarbans where the Ganges and the Brahmaputra rivers empty into the Bay of Bengal, marks the moment when one of the most apocalyptic predictions of environmentalists and climate scientists has started coming true."

According to TheNewsisNowPublic.com, the story was a hoax.

BBC didn't bother to mention that Lohachare Island disappeared 22 years ago and that the entire region of The Sundarbans is a river delta, or that the disappearance of the island has been attributed to erosion, not global warming."

  7. So untrue. It IS happening. They say it's not happening because they do not want to change what they are doing. Because that way they can keep earning $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$... you know.

  8. its definatly happening

  9. Its not happening. Even John Coleman, founder of the Weather Channel, has said so. Its a natural process. The bulk of data has been presented to mislead you, and most is fabricated by liberals so they can carbon tax you.

  10. sure, the atmosphere's gettin some more gasses in it, but sure as h**l not enough to cause global catastrophe. those left wing liberal environmentalists should stop bitching all the time

  11. I have taken numerous classes on this in college.  There is evidence to support it and there is evidence to refute it.  Throughout the earth's history there have been numerous natural times of significant cooling and heating of the earth.  The biggest question now is if there is global warming, is it due to human impacts such as green house gases, pollution, etc.  Just something to think about.

  12. global warming is true. i have seen it with my own two eyes. it is out there. and if we dont do somthing about it. let me just put it this way "bad things are going to happen"

  13. lol you guys are so ignorant. people only say global warming doesn't exist because that way, we can continue the destructive but convenient processes that we're used to without any guilt, and so they can show other people that they hate liberals, and make an argument against them.

get a life, it's not like al gore was the one who first thought of the idea of global warming, he's not THAT smart. and even if global warming isn't true, it's not like it would harm anyone or anything to be more cautious of what we do to our environment.

the earth will be fine, its the people that have something to worry about

  14. It's not fricken happening. The earth goes through different stages. If it's hot, they blame it on global warming. It's Cold out? guess it's global warming! same temperature? GLOBAL WARMING! OMG! just shut up. not you though. the scientist people. ya that's my opinion and my science teachers. :)

  15. No its not true.

  16. Global warming is true and is happeneing at a very rapid rate. Global warming is a natural process that has contributed to our survival but due to human influences we have sped up the process to a rate that the world cannot cope with.

  17. Well in the 70s we were going to have another Ice Age, people freaked out, jumped on the band wagon, and........ NOTHING!! Now less than 30 years later we're all going to die from extreme heat!!!!!!!!!! Ahhh we better prepare!!  Only the very small minded would believe the VERY debatable THEORY of global warming.

Its just a theory and no one can prove it.

  18. The globe is always warming or cooling. It has never and it will never remain at a constant temperature. There is no debate over the warming that happened in the last century, however, temps have not increased since 1998 and there seems to be more of a consensus now that the warming was due to cyclical natural processes, not human activities. The world has been warming since the little ice age. There is nothing abnormal about ice melting in and around the north pole. Read through some of the articles from the link below. Should we study climate change, absolutely. Should we implement economic back breaking policy to try to control climate, absolutely not.
