Is it true that hybrid cars actually cause more damage to the environment in their life cycle than normal cars

I thought I heard that the manufacturing of the hybrid system including it's batteries does more damage in the long run than a regular car. The batteries also go through a long manufacturing process as they must be shipped to various places around the world.

  1. Yes, yes yes.

The batteries contain a vast amount of heavy metals, far more than a standard car. The manufacturing process inevitably releases a great deal of these metals which is far worse to the environment than a regular gasoline or diesel engine. The worst part~ try driving a Prius through a few inches of water. They have this wonderful tendency to explode. Not to mention the many techs that have been severely hurt or killed by shocks from the high amperage battery systems. The batteries also have a very limited life span and must be replaced far more frequently than most people expect. Especially if you drive longer distances every day.

Current model engines are very, very clean running, only Water, carbon Dioxide, a very small amount of Carbon Monoxide and a trace amount of nitrogen come out the tailpipe. Basically, most of the same stuff you give off while breathing.

Just think, in a few years these death traps will be found in scrap yards all over. The battery systems will be open to the elements and able to leach toxins straight into your water supply.

  2. No, Hybrid cars are a combination of regular combustion engine and electrical assisted motor, when the vehicle is not under certain requirment for additional power, it's operated by a battery, at this time, no emmissions are being emitted into the atmosphere, combustion engine comes on when there is need for power or when the battery runs low on the charge, that's how you save on gas, otherwise, it's like riding in an electric golf cart, If the battery fails and need replacement, there are recycling places for that right now, and they will insure that no toxins escape. so it's not true what you were told.

  3. no... acceleration is when a car uses the most power to get moving..... on a normal car this would use up the most gas.. but on a hybrid the electric motor goes on during acceleration.  the gas engine will only go on after the car hits 40mph
