Id heard that once you have been accepted for immigation into Canada you can then work and live in the USA for as long as you like as they are closely linked. Is this true?

I suspect its probably not as they are both seperate countries.

  1. No. You can not satisfy the requirements of both countries and you will most likely end up in neither.

  2. Only if a US company hires you, otherwise NO. You will need to get H-1 visa.

  3. Totally bogus. Why would two completely separate countries share immigrants? No I'm sorry, even Canadians can't live and work in the US with out proper documents. Same for a US citizen wishing to move to Canada. Sure is a lot of misinformation out there.

  4. yes it is.

  5. Absolutely zero percent truth to what you have heard. It couldn't be more false.

Once you have been accepted for immigration to Canada, you can then work and live in Canada for as long as you like, and that's it.

Argentina and Uruguay are closing linked too, but they have separate immigration laws and being a resident in one place doesn't give you a license to do anything you want in the other.

  6. It's a "partial no" to your question.

Lot of the other answers here are incorrect about some aspects though.

Canada has a trade agreement with the United States.  In that agreement there are 2 special immigration permits for Canadian's wanting to work in the U.S.A.

One is the L-1 (Intracompany Transferee) which makes it very easy to transfer within the same company between a Canadian location and a US location.  You can do all the paperwork for this right at the border, just need to bring with you supporting documents from your company that your transferring.

The other is a TN (Treaty Nafta) which also lets you go right to the border and get permission to work in the USA.  It's fairly easy to get a TN for many job classifications if you have education and a job letter from a US company.  It's very fast to get since you can get it right at the border when you drive up if you have your supporting documents ready.   With TN status you live and work in the United States for  one year at a time but you can renew the status for additional one year periods. There is no limit on the number of times you can renew.

But this is not an indefinite thing, it is still a 'temporary' status.

Please keep in mind though the above applies to Canadian citizens.  If you are a landed immigrant in Canada, and don't yet have your full citizenship, you couldn't take advantage of the above.
