  1. I have a Russian all-white dwarf w/black eyes.. And, he loves to play.. BUT i must admit, he bites if i wake him up or when he doesn't want to be disturbed. But when he's up and active, he'll get on my hand to play!!!

  2. I've never heard that.

Any animal, including birds, will turn nasty if not handled often and given enough attention.

Get yourself a dwarf hamster and enjoy!

  3. Okay, this is a tough question to answer.  I had several dwarf hamster families over the years.  I'd say I've had at least forty dwarf hamsters and in this time I have seen my share of weird behavior with them.

Every hamster has their own personality.  Some don't mind being handled and others just don't want to be touched or bothered.  I find the main problem with nasty hamsters is either A) it's just their personality or B) they are not used to people.  One reason a dwarf hamster bought from a local pet store is a bad idea is because they don't always get enough human attention to get used to us.  A third problem I have encountered is from age.  Sometimes as they get older they become cranky or temperamental.  They might not mind being picked up at times but then other times they will bite and run away.

Hamsters mainly bite because they are afraid or they smell food on your fingers.  If a hamster isn't used to you and doesn't trust you yet they will bite out of fear. Dwarf hamsters being nasty is overrated and labeled as nasty because some people don't take the time to understand why they bite.

Let me put it this way.  Several of my dwarf hamsters bought from the pet store were very nasty to me and would bite a lot.  They simply did not trust me after trying several times to earn that trust.  The majority of the hamsters that were born in my home and raised here were used to people and they were gentle and friendly.

Well, this is all just my opinion anyway.

  4. the other day i went to petco to buy a dwarf hamster because i thought they were adorable;the lady that was assisting me let me know a little about their character and such and mentioned that dwarf hamsters are a little more on edge  and are more prone to biting rather than a long haired hamster. So i ended up buying the long-haired hamster and named her lucy, for the first couple of days she would bite if she was woken up unexpectedly but once they get use to your smell and are use to being handled on a regular bases they really are suuuper cute! hope it helped.
