I heard that from a few people (who aren't teachers) and I was just curious.

If it is true, do you apply/register for a special program? or is it automatic?

  1. There is a program, and it is not automatic.  It's called APLE (Assumption Program of Loans for Education).  There are several conditions that have to be met.  For example, you have to be enrolled in a credentialing program and have to agree to teach in one of the areas of high demand (list includes low performing school, Special Education, etc.) for four years.

  2. Also there is Project Teach.  Same concept.  You get money up front if you teach in a high needs school.
