  1. nope, you can get pregnant at just about any time if you aren't careful. The most dangerous times to get pregnant are 14 to 18 days after the start date of your last period. Sperm can live in your body for a day or so and the ovum will travel down and if they meet , BABY!

  2. It's definitely much less likely -- but not impossible.

  3. That's mostly true... but you have to look at the whole picture.

Fact Number 1: After an egg ovulates, it will die after about 12 hours if it doesn't get fertilized.  Death of the egg could be as little as 6 hours, and possibly as much as 24.

Fact Number 2:  While it's possible to ovulate only once during your period, you can ovulate more than one egg  (this is how you get fraternal twins).  If multiple eggs are ovulated, they likely will not erupt from the ovaries at exactly the same time.  However, once an egg erupts, the corpus ludieum left beind begins to secrete a chemical that tells the ovaries not to ovulate any more eggs.  However, it takes 6 to 24 hours before the ovaries respond.  In the mean time, additional eggs can ovulate.

That means that there is POTENTIALLY as much as a 48 hour window after ovulation during which you MIGHT get pregnant.

Avoiding s*x after ovulation is a valid form of birth control, it's called FAM (Fertility Awareness Method).  To safely use this as a form of birth control, you have to CAREFULLY determine when you ovulated, and then wait three days.  For those familiar with the terminology, after you experience three consecutive days with a BBT above the cover line, you can consider yourself infertile and it's safe to have s*x and not get pregnant.  You can expect yourself to continue to be infertile until 5 days after AF arrives.

Properly used, FAM has a failure rate of less than 2% if you totally abstain from s*x during your potentially fertile phase (6 days after AF until 3 days after ovulation).  If you do have s*x during your fertile period, the failure rate is about equal to what ever form of birth control you used during that fertile period.

However, because FAM require daily monitoring of your fertility signs, as well as some self control to abstain, it has a typical failure rate around 15%.  Many who use it either fail to proper monitor their fertility daily, or engage in risky behavior (s*x while fertile).

  4. More than likely that is true.

The shelf life of an egg is very short so the best thing to do is start having s*x on cycle day 7 and keep having s*x every day or every other day until cycle day 16 or until you get a positive OPK.

I have friends who just had s*x every day of the month except when on the period and they got pregnant fast that way!

Honestly, once you know you have ovulated then you probably won't get pregnant.  The sperm should ideally be there waiting for the egg.

    Tasha isn't correct.  Sorry, Tasha.

The *best* days to have s*x are what I outlined.

HooKooDoo brings up an excellent point and DUH I should have realized that!  Sometimes women do produce more than one egg at a different time in your cycle.  Look at me!  I did!  Luckily for us we caught both the eggies!  Woooo!
