I'm almost 17 and am getting a 125cc scooter. I've heard that if you live in Northern Ireland (which I do) that you don't need to take a CBT test. I'll get a car license first though. Could somebody please explain?

thanks.

  1. You are right. CBT is not compulsory here but a lot of young people do do it anyway. Here if you have a full car license you can drive a moped 50cc or so without doing the bike test. But the laws are changing so we will all be covered by the same rules.

  2. Motorcycle and Scooter Licences

You have to be at least 17 years old before you can hold a provisional motorcycle licence which allows you to ride a moped, motorcycle or scooter as a learner with L plates. A provisional licence issued before 1 February 2001 is valid for two years. Licences issued after 1 February 2001 are valid until the rider is 70 years old.

After a CBT course is completed anyone over the age of 17 years can ride a bike up to 125cc unaccompanied, and displaying L plates.
