i live near san jose and mine started on the 20th of august but my friend lives near san jose too, and hers is starting in september

In the south school starts in August and the Northern states school starts right after Labor day in September.

It depends on where you live.  In some places school does start in late August in others early September.

yes to my knowledge most in the midwest start in august, i live in missouri and school started august 19th, and in kansas it starts around the 21st of august
