  1. If your brother does not buy brand name, then what does he buy?  Every camcorder is manufactured and sold under a brand name.  There are no generic camcorders available.

  2. Every brand has its lemons.  The brands you listed are top names with top cameras.  Brands to avoid are Durabrand, Bell & Howell,  GE

  3. JVC, Panasonic, Sony, and Canon make the best camcorders around, including most of the professional models. I had one JVC I finally retired after 10 years of use, which still basically worked, despite having been dropped several times. I have an 8-year-old Sony that I stopped using, but it's still working. My three year old Sony HDV camcorder hasn't had a problem, neither has my year old Canon HDV camcorder, my four year old Canon DSLR, or either of the Panasonic Lumix digital pocket cameras in my family.

Now, some people don't have as much luck... any company can deliver a defective camera. But in general, these companies make some of the best product out there. They're using by thousands of professionals and millions of consumers a day, without a problem.

And really, your brother-in-law sounds like a tool. Anyone who makes such a generalization across all these companies, based on a bad experience with one product (and for all I know, it was dropped or otherwise abused) is simply not someone who's capable of offering you useful advice.

With that said, you can certainly expect a $300 camcorder (very low end) to perhaps not be as long-lasting as a $2300 camcorder. But in ordinary use, carefully treated, they will last for many, many years. Also, if you did have a camcoder or camera that died after six months, and it wasn't due to something bad you did to it, every one of these companies would fix it for free. So if your brother-in-law didn't take advantage of that, that's a pretty good indication it wasn't the camera at fault.

  4. I don't know about JVC and Panasonic, but Sony sure makes a fine camcorder.  My old school that I took video production and film production in had five Sony camcorders that were a few years old and still working fine.  The brand new ones, of course, were still great.

Your brother-in-law may, in fact, be right about JVC and Panasonic camcorders, but he couldn't be more wrong about Sony camcorders!

    Canon also makes fine camcorders!
