  1. Robert Stroud's first bird in prison was a Sparrow ,he was later allowed Canaries which he was allowed to breed.

    It was through these that he wrote his first book.


  2. Ah, dear Robert. He was so gentle with his birds. Shame he couldn't treat people the same way. No, he wasn't allowed to keep birds in Alcatraz and he wasn't half as good looking and charming as Burt Lancaster, so I think the film embroidered the facts a bit.

    No, he was not allowed to take any birds with him after he left Wentworth Prison. All his work on Avian disease's were also done in Wentworth prison.

  4. Take a look at this link. Looks as though he was the 'bird man' before he got to Alcatras, and spent most of his time there on the hospital wing.  Interesting story though !!  x

  5. not true he did and changed the way we look after birds and the medicines we give them and made his own that are still used today

  6. i saw the film birdman of alcatraz only yesterday with burt lancaster and he did have birds on the rock

  7. It is true - he had birds in the prison he was at prior to the rock but was not allowed them when he moved to Alcatraz.
