  1. Besides the above answers... it also depends on the type of restaurant. For casual or low-cost restaurants it is not expected to tip the Maitre D.


  2. If  he  handles  any  special  requests  for  special  seating,  liquor  handling  or  food  issues,  Yes.    If  he  just  walks  you  to   the  first  available  table,   I  don't  tip  him.

  3. If you want a special table, yes.

  4. I would do it only under the most extreme of circumstances.

    Examples would be...

    If they get you seated at a great table, or if you didn't have reservations during a busy time...

    If they helped you to celebrate a special occasion...

    If they did you some kind of other special favor...

    Also, if you come to the restaurant often and want to say ''thank you''.
