  1. It is indeed true, providing of course that you live within the Commonwealth!

  2. People who turn 100 and are otherwise eligible (live in the Commonwealth for example) are able to have a letter sent to them.

My grandparent's had their 60th wedding anniversary half a dozen years ago now and this is another occasion to get a letter from the Queen.

One of my relatives contacted their local state representative and they organised it - they got a letter from their local member, the premier or governer (state political and non-political representative) and prime minister or governer general (federal political and non political representative) and the Queen.

  3. I work in an aged care home and every resident that turned 100 got a letter from the Queen.

  4. yes it is true, I don't know, I guess she will be notified of that month etc of how many people turn 100.

  5. Yes, but only if she is told in advance!

A relative of mine turned 100 a few years ago.  I wrote to Buckingham Palace a few weeks beforehand with details and was sent a form to fill out.

Lo and behold, Auntie got her birthday card from the Queen on her birthday.  It was a picture of Queen Elizabeth on the front, with a message and facsimile signature inside, postmarked "Buckingham Palace".

  7. People must send in an application for a message from the Queen on the centenarian's birthday.

    http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/234.asp

tells how: "HOW DO PEOPLE GET A CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE FROM THE QUEEN?

The Queen sends congratulatory messages for Diamond, sixty-fifth and Platinum (seventieth) wedding anniversaries and every year thereafter, and for the one hundredth and one hundred and fifth birthdays and every year thereafter. These are sent only to citizens of The Queen's Realms or UK Overseas Territories.

Relatives or the individuals themselves must apply in advance of the date for which the message is required, since no automatic notification is received by Buckingham Palace when a special birthday or wedding anniversary is reached.

All applications must be accompanied by photocopies of the relevant birth or marriage certificates. View further information and download an application form."

It goes on to say,"For many people, receiving a congratulatory card from The Queen to mark a significant birthday or wedding anniversary is a very special part of their celebrations.

Since 1917, the Sovereign has sent congratulatory messages to people celebrating notable birthdays and anniversaries.

Cards are sent to those celebrating their 100th and 105th birthday and every year thereafter, and to those celebrating their diamond wedding (60th), 65th, 70th wedding anniversaries and every year thereafter.

The Queen's congratulatory messages consist of a card containing a personalised message with a facsimile signature. The card comes in a special envelope, which is delivered through the normal postal channels.

The delivery of these messages is arranged by the Anniversaries Office, part of the Private Secretary's Office in the Royal Household, based at Buckingham Palace.

The Pension Service informs the Anniversaries Office of birthdays for recipients of UK State pensions. But, for data privacy reasons, there is no automatic alert from Government records for wedding anniversaries.

For this reason, to make sure that a message is sent for birthdays and wedding anniversaries alike, an application should preferably be made by a relative or friend in advance of the special day.

More information about applying for a message and interesting facts about the tradition are featured in this section. "

  8. You get a card, but you have to apply for it, it's not automatic, you also get one on your diamond wedding anniversary.
