Because I have a friend who has graduated in drama and is desperately seeking employment. However, a number of agents have said they are not hiring as there is lack of work at the moment.

IS this true?

  1. It's not a "lack" of work. There are just too many wannabe actors for the available parts. This is easily the most competitive industry there is.

I'm actually surprised an agent would even say that to your friend. Sounds like a blow off line to me. Agents want to get paid and they get paid when their actors get paid. Therefore, if they find someone who has a great look and is talented...they'll represent them.

  2. Yes, same movies, same ending, same stupid plot

  3. Less people are going to the theatre as the countries economy is shrinking leaving people with less money and actors out of work.

  4. It is partially the credit crunch and partly the time of year.  The panto producers have been hiring recently, but there hasn't been much else around.  Theatre tends to go in cycles, some months quiet and others really busy.  There isn't much around in Stage Management at the moment, which suggests to me that there isn't much around in acting either.  This year I had 5 weeks work in January/February and then nothing until May.  In this business you have to accept that there will be long periods with no work (unless you are exceedingly lucky).  Your friend is also in the unfortunate position of being a recent graduate, so won't have much on his CV.  I know that in London there are a number of theatres which are unused at the moment.  I bet that in a few months time, they will all have shows on.  As long as your friend doesn't give up hope, something will turn up sooner or later.
