I heard that the eggs we eat weren't going to be actual chicken anyways, cause hens do eggs weather they're impregnated or not...

  1. If there is no s*x there is no fertalized egg. but they get laid every day.

  2. Hens, unlike some other birds, lay eggs whether they are fertilised or not. For a fertilised egg, there needs to be a cockerel present, otherwise all eggs will be unfertilised.

Many people do not know this, and therefore there are many vegetarians who won't eat eggs as they think the embryo of a chick would develop inside. This is a rarity though, as farms that produce eggs hardly ever let cockerels get in contact with the hens!

I disagree with caged hen eggs as the hens used to produce the eggs are fed chemicals in their food that make them continually lay eggs. This is a strain on the chicken, so it is best to let the eggs occur naturally and "free range".

The summary: Yes, hens do lay unfertilised eggs! :)

  3. Eggs happen anyway. You need a cockerel with the hens to have a chance of a fertile egg. Most of the eggs you can buy will not be fertilised.

    unfortunately for me that's true.

Let me start off by saying we (my family and I) live completely, 100% “off of the grid and are completely self sufficient” using alternative fuels / energy. I was in the exact same situation as you few years ago.

We do not leave our ranch except about once or twice a year, mainly for travel and vacations.

We raise meat and milk goats, chickens for meat and eggs, ducks for meat and eggs, trap havilina (wild boar pig), rabbit, quail. brew our own beer from home grown products, preserve our fruits, vegetables, etc. smoke and jerky the meat, make our own soap, cheese

The amount of eggs (bread, breakfast, cakes etc) depend on how many eggs we get per day which depends on how many new chickens we get which depends on how many chickens my one and only rooster "hope", lets say for a lack of a better word.

if her eggs are fertilized she will roost them for about a month before they hatch. at any point during this time you can go in and "candle"one to see if it's fertilized or not. it will have what looks like a spiderweb inside. you can still eat this, some people just may see it as gross, but there's no health issues there. in some countries it's a delicacy.

our rooster's getting on in age though so we tend to get less fertile eggs as time goes on.

Hope this helped, feel free to contact me personally if you have any questions
