  1. In 1961, Wham-O introduced the original Slip ’N Slide®, which quickly became a permanent warm weather favorite among kids around the world.

Although Richard Knerr is most famous for his inventions of the Frisbee and Hula hoop, he also created the super bouncy ball, the slip N slide, the Limbo Game and silly string. Young children's games were Knerr's forte and he had great success with almost all of his inventions.

Richard Knerr, who gave the company he and a friend started in a garage the altogether appropriate name Wham-O, then marketed products that for two decades virtually defined frivolity in postwar America, from the Hula Hoop to the Frisbee to the SuperBall, died on Monday at his home in Arcadia, Calif. He was 82.

I'm not sure if he lived in Winston-Salem when he invented it or not.

  2. You're thinking of the "Smoke and Slide".  It's just like the slipper, but at the end of the slide a robotic arm shoves a lit cigarette in your mouth.
