Is it true that the safest place to be if there were to be a Nuclear attack is the Southern Hemesphere?

I was told once that if there were a nuclear war between the USA and Russia, China, N.Korea, Iran, ect, the smartest thing to due would be to head south of the equator to like New Zeland or Austrailia or even south Argentina/Chile to avoid the fallout alltogether.

This makes sence to me cause all the "nuke" countries are in the Northern Hemesphere.

Though I dont know much about the way in which Nuclear fallout disperses.

Hence why I asked.

Most populated areas of earth is is in northern hemisphere and so will be the bombing. In south,you may not be directly hit,radiation will travel by air and slowly pollute the air.But that is not immediate death!
