Is it true that there is no tax on clothes in Massachusetts?

  1. True. No tax on food, either. As the saying goes, "If you can eat it or wear it, it's not taxed."

Partially true.  There is no tax on clothing with a single item price of $175 or less.  Anything more expensive is fully taxable.  That limit has existed since the sales tax was first implemented back in the 1960s.  $175 was unthinkable for most clothing back then though a good coat or a cheap suit will easily exceed that today.

    As noted by another poster there is no sales tax on food, however there IS a meals tax on ready-to-eat foods and restaurant meals whether eaten in or taken out.  The meal tax rate is 8% if memory serves correctly while the general sales tax rate is around 5%.
