  1. A fish is the perfect 'step down' for anyone who longboards.  Chances are you're 'surfing style' is more front footed as thats how most longboarders surf.  It's the way the board works under your feet.  A fish works great for those who surf more 'front footed' since the transition is more natural than say going from a  longboard to a shortboard (ridden from the tail).

They definitely surf different than shortboards.  See the previous poster's description - it's pretty close.  Don't worry, you won't need to learn to 'ride' a fish anymore than you would any other board.

Be warned though - they are a blast :)

  2. Old school or retro fish do ride different than modern shortboard shapes.  If you see someone who can surf well on one they tend to be more "flowy" with longer arcing turns, although they can turn sharp when needed.  Your choice of board should reflect your personal style.  If you're looking to surf progressively and boost airs then a retro fish is not for you.  Go through Surfline's store section and watch some of the trailers for different movies and see what appeals to you.
