  1. I don't know the answer to that all i know is i am white, and i tip 15% even at drive thru if they have to bring me the food such as the sonic....most wait people are paid below min.wage and they need  the tips to balance their budget....I don't tip dry cleaners, or anyone where i have to pick up myself, and i dont tip if service is shoddy...where ever i am...

  2. I waited tables for years... there are definitely people that fit the stereotype but it's not true for everyone.

  3. I was a waitress for many years, and in my experience it is true that white people generally tip better than black people.  This is NOT ALWAYS the case though.  Two of my favorite regulars were black and they were among the best tippers I ever had.  It does depend largely on the individual.

  4. no black and white people tip on there personal individual needs!

i know white people who tip very well but then if you look at my mom she is  a very poor tipper!  10% max and if you suck at your job she gives you  maybe 1 dollar!

    that's so spitefull!

however some black people can be very good tippers like anyone once you build a realtionship with a place or person they are more inclided to get more tips!

  5. when i delivered pizzas it seemed to be that way alot but plenty of white people didnt tip too. and there were black people who did. i dont know why it is but i didnt like anyone who didnt tip regardless of what they looked like.

  6. 60 minutes did a story on this about 5 or so years ago.  They did a huge survey.  The study concluded that whites do tip more than blacks.

    It is a cultural thing.

Black patrons didn't think they had to tip to get extra service.  They also felt uncomfortable in sit down restaurants to begin with. Many black patrons opt for take out food and eat at home.

White patrons are conditioned to leave tips.

Keep in mind I am speaking about the populations in general.  Of course there are some individual blacks that leave generous tips and some whites that never tip at all.

It did not matter if the server was white or black. They even had a black server on that made the comment on how she preffered to wait on white people because the black people wouldn't tip.

So it is all about culture.  Europeans are not used to tipping either.  When they come eat over here, they often don't leave tips.  It is to the point where some restaurants are automaticly putting the tip in the bill to european clients.

I was trying to search the 60 minutes site to paste the link but I could not find it.  But I am pretty sure it was Ed Bradley that conducted the interview.

  7. Probably true, and I'm Black. I have to sometimes let people know the proper etiquette for tips. To me, I believe it is more of an economic thing than race. I do not believe there is any harm intended, but someone who doesn't have a lot of money does not go places where tipping is necessary so are not aware of the unwritten rules.

  8. That is so true.  I work at a restaurant and all the servers would rather not take that table.  I wouldn't say all black people don't tip well but a majority that I've had experience with don't.

  9. well they say paint a canoe black and it will never tip but then again i have had a pizza delivered and paid exact change so who knows

  10. Well I think it goes back to our history as a country and economics. White people made black people slaves, and when slavery was abolished they were left with nothing, while the white people had money. The black people had to work their way up from the bottom, while the whites generally had money. It's sad, but today because of slavery and the civil rights movement, I think that black people in general are still behind economically, so they might leave less of a tip than a white person. Also, this might sound rude, but I think from the beginning that since white people had more money they were privledged to etiquette when black people wern't, so blacks might not realize the value of tipping in comparison to whites.

This is a general explanation that I came up with. There are some blacks and some whites who fit outside the guidelines I came up with, but generally I think this is why they don't tip as much.
