  1. You only ovulate once a month, but that doesn't mean pregnancy is impossible the rest of the time. You can't always tell which day you are ovulating, and sperm can survive a few days in the body and effectively 'wait' for ovulation.

Obviously, is also best to use condoms to protect against STDs.

  2. It is true that the egg is only viable for 6-12 hours, sometimes up to 24 hours.  So a female is only fertile for that amount of time out of the month.  Sperm however can live for up to 5 days so if you time intercourse even a few days before ovulation (the release of the egg) it's possible to become pregnant.  Ovulation varies from woman to woman.  It's all about learning about your body and learning how long your cycles are and when you ovulate.  Everyone is different.

  3. 24 hours is true. Once the egg leaves the ovary sperm only has 12-24 hours to fertilize it.

Generally speaking the majority of women ovulate mid-cycle, it can be day 14, 15, 12, 17...it all depends on how long your cycle is (the first day of your period is day 1). The key is paying very close attention to your body...for me I have really bad gas the day or 2 days before and often feel ovulation pain. Ovulation pain can range from a sharp to dull pain or ache on one side of you body (where your ovaries would be located). It's not an all day pain or even that long lasting, it's pretty quick...it happens as the egg bursts out of the ovary. In my case most of the time I feel it on my left side, as with anything you have 2 of them, one is usually more dominant and you will feel it more (if you can at all) on one side.

With that said, given the right conditions sperm can survive for up to 5 days...just waiting around for an egg. And, it is possible to release more than one egg per cycle.

Track your cycle, see how long it is and start to pay attention mid-cycle to the clues your body may be giving you

  4. yep.. the trick is knowing when that 24 hours is lol.

  5. It's different for every woman. Some woman ovulate towards the beginning of their cycle, others towards the end, some right in the middle, and some during their periods. Some woman, although rare, ovulate more than once during the month.

Stress can effect when someone ovulates, as can other factors. Unless a woman is monitory their ovulation closely, most women don't actually know exactly when they ovulate.

  6. That's somewhat true. You can only get pregnant when you're ovulating or about to ovulate. Ovulation usually occurs around day 14 of your cycle, but not every woman's cycle is the same. Your egg is mature for 12-24 hours and that is the window that the sperm have to fertilize it, but sperm can live in a woman's body for up to 5 days just waiting.
