Is it true that you have to get a fcc license for walkie talkie so you could extend your distance area?

like if the box says it could go 5 miles but it really doesnt. but when you get the fcc license it really gos to 5 miles?

  1. Im pretty sure it's free, but you have to take a test.

    I have an FCC licenses for HAM radios, and had to take a test about 12 years ago, I hear the tests are super easy today.


  2. the FRS band is for license free operation only.

    if you get a commercial band license, that will not work with FRS equipment, you will next need to spend $400-500 for a commercial band walkie talkie. You may find that you still won't get range over 1/2 mile or so without the use of a repeater, ($4000 plus another license).

  3. GMRS requires an $85 license as the manual to your radios will explain.  The extra power allowed under GMRS regulations will only help if you use commercial-grade equipment.  5 Miles with any handheld is a stretch, if possible at all unless you use a repeater, wheich no consumer-grade equipment is capable of.
