  1. Both yes and no, it really depends on the department that you are applying to. In most cases the Sheriffs department has either a mandatory one or two years that you must serve in the jail prior to being placed on the streets. If you do not want to work in the jail then you might want to apply with a local PD.

Without knowing where your from I can't give you specifics but it really depends on where you live, because I live in California and it varies by county. In Alameda county the sheriffs run the jail but in near by Santa Clara county the jail is run is contracted to the department of corrections, so the Santa Clara County Sheriffs are on the streets after the academy. Hope it helps.

  2. You will already work if put in a correctional institute...have to pay your way...has nothing to do with being put on the streets

  3. No.  This is not true.  It is possible to go directly to patrol work ("streets") fresh from the academy.

However, many sheriff's offices operate a county jail, and in some counties, these county jails are very large, needing hundreds of deputies.  In departments such as these, sometimes deputies are required to work in the jail first.

It should be pointed out that working in a large jail can provide a lot of experience that can be used on patrol.  Second, depending on what area you live in, some agencies consider experience in corrections to be very valuable.

  4. That is a matter of department policy, but is not required of all agencies.

  5. It depends. Ask your pimp.

  6. From 1965 to 1976, we worked on patrol 6 mo and in the jail 6 mo.

Since the advent of the Correctional Officer, this classification has replaced, the in / out routine of many Sheriff Departments and Police Departments, who use to have to work the Jail as a punishment, or as a rotational assignment, is gone.

Correctional officers also helped consolidate jails of a city(s) to that of one Metro jail of the County lock up.

  7. Not in my locality.  Again, not much I can do to help you with this very vague and ambiguous question.

  8. When working for a county sheriff, yes. Minimum 1 to 3 years..........
