  1. Puerto Rico has alot of nice beaches it just depends on what you like. I agree that San Juan is not the best for beaches mostly because its a large city & that makes polution. Puerto Rico is 100 miles x 35 miles so everything is reachable in a car within a few hours or less. Ok so I will tell you some of the best beaches in PR. Below click the links for more info & driving directions too. You can rent a car in San Juan.

Flamenco Beach, Culebra island and SunBay & Red Beach, Vieques island have gorgeous white sand beaches with crystal waters. These islands are on the east side of PR. From San Juan drive an hour to Fajardo & take a ferry over. OR take a small plane straight from San Juan.

Rincon on the west coast has nice amber sand beaches with great surfing & beautiful sunsets. Its about a 2 hour drive west of San Juan. There are other similar beaches on this side like Shacks in Isabela & Crashboat in Aguadilla.

On the south side (caribbean side), you can go to places like Caja de Muertos island or Gilligan's island for white sand & calm waters. & Guanica near Ponce has nice beaches too & a dry forest nearby.
