yes i agree with it , but Garda have carried guns way before this , just not on normal day activity's

Depends on what position in the Garda Siochana you hold.  Only detectives, armed response units and special branch etc., otherwise they can only carry a truncheon - and an extendable one at that ! (no joke - fact !)

According to a recent government report, 3,000 (out of 12,000) members of the force are armed — this includes the Emergency Response Unit and Special Branch/Special Detective Unit, as well as the majority of detectives. However, all officers are trained in the use of firearms while undergoing police training

Not sure about the Garda carrying firearms the police are armed in Northern Ireland and only certain units here carry them them

Not heard anything about the police carrying guns here Mrs S, and I think it was a female officer that left the gun in Starbucks, probably had too much coffee!.
