No!! I promise you they are not painted. they are the White chalk cliffs of Dover so no need to paint them. I lived there for 5years so it's the truth

The white cliffs of Dover are cliffs which form part of the British coastline facing the Strait of Dover and France. The cliffs are part of the North Downs formation. The cliff face, which reaches up to 350 feet high, owes its striking façade to its composition of chalk (pure white calcium carbonate) accentuated by streaks of black flint. The cliffs spread east and west from the town of Dover in the county of Kent, an ancient and still important English port.

Of course they have to. All that sea water bashing them each day washes away all the paint.

As for the idea that they are made of chalk! Every schoolboy will tell you that chalk dissolves in water (look at the limestone csaverns at Wookey Hole & Cheddar Gorge). If the cliffs were chalk, they would have been washed away by now.

No, the cliffs are good old-fashioned coal from the Kent coalfield. Now a black cliff would hardly be welcoming would it? So it's a paint job every year.
