This might just be a rumor, but I heard that if you work in the city of Detroit, the minimum hourly wage you are supposed to be paid legally is $12. Can anyone tell me if there is any truth to this or where I could find out if this is true?

  1. See this site for minimum wage laws in the U.S.

  2. It keeps going up, but it's only at $7.40 right now.

Someone may have had the law confused with another law that deals specifically with companies that are under city contracts (working on roads, cleaning city buildings etc). The following is an excerpt from a Metro Times article written in 2002 so the law could very well  be $12 an hour, but only if the company is working on a city contract:

"Under Detroit’s ordinance, companies that have a city contract, get tax breaks, planning assistance or grants exceeding $50,000 from the city must pay employees a wage equal to the federal poverty level for a family of four. Today, that is $9.05 an hour with health benefits and $11.31 an hour without benefits. A dozen other communities around the state have adopted similar ordinances."

There was also a living wage oordnance passed in Detroit, but it's not enforced of $8.35

  3. The minimum wage in Detroit is not $12. Minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. You are not supposed to get paid any less than this.
