Well I'm transferring to a boarding school in England this year. I've never been to England before but my friend told me they still use corporal punishment, is that true?

I'm not exactly a saint all the time so I'm kind of nervous, my grades are good but I'm always in detention.

If they do use it, is there anyway of getting out of it.

Help please.

Also I'm going to be in Year 9, Key stage 3, what does that mean?

  1. No corporal punishment went years n years ago. And am not sure about the year 9, key stage sorry

  2. No. It's not true, they haven't used corporal punishment in decades in state schools. It was properly banned in private schools in the 90's I think. I think your friend is just trying to wind you up. Don't worry about it, the worst you'll get is detention or clean up duty. Although you wouldn't be worrying about it if you behaved yourself, would you.

Keg stage 3, is how we split up the education in Britain. Key stage 3 covers years 7,8 and 9. It's the first part of secondary school. Year 9 is similar to the American 8th grade. (I'm assuming that's where you are from). I'm in Year 11, key stage 4.

You'll have a lot of fun here, enjoy.

  3. of course they dont.

  4. No! It's illegal.  Key Stage 3 is the 3rd of 5 key stages - they are mainly for teachers as reference.  You will  going into the year that SATS exams are taken (although if it's a boarding school you may not have to as private schools aren't goverened by the National Curriculum) and year 9 is the year before you start your GCSE's.

  5. No they don't use corporal punishment any more but i think they should for the worst pupils. The worst punishment you can get now is detention. Year nine is the 3rd year in secondary school.

  6. No, it's not true. But you need to be aware that a boarding school does not have to put up with repeated pratting about, nor do they have to justify their decisions. If you get detention all the time, they'll simply tell your parents they don't want you there and that will be that.

Year 9 is for people who are 13 on 1st September 2008. We don't have the US concept of having to pass a grade here - you move up whatever. Key stage 3 is just a name given collectively to years 7-9.

  7. No way! Don't be silly, your friend is just pulling your leg :), you've got nothing to worry about on that front.

As for Year 9, Key Stage 3 etc - Year is like your grade I think?

Year 9= 3rd year of high school/ secondary school

Key Stage 3= The 3rd "Key stage" i.e Year 7-9

  8. Of course they dont! In this day and age they wouldnt dare lay a finger on you let alone an instrument! Englands not scary...honest!

  9. no unfortunatly you can no longer be hit or caned by law which is why kids are like they are year 9 means that your in year 9th of your school life key stage 3 is the level you should be at
