  1. all ideologies are social constructs and easily taken apart by those not indoctrinated by the rhetoric.

    what is a true conviction?

a true conviction is what an indoctrinated person believes they have. ask a born again, a muslim, a feminist, a communist, a socialist pick any one, they will tell you that their convictions are THE true convictions.

an ideology will come with thought stopping simple answers and accusations for the indoctrinated to use when challenged. that way the indoctrinated never has to actually think about what is being said to them by the "outsider".

eg, you are just threatened, egos fragile, tiny p***s, haven't see the light, satan is controlling you, you're an infidel etc

  2. Yes, I think believe who have faith in what they say will be up for a challenge. They will also have to resort to ad hominem attacks (though some do, sadly).

  3. I've only met one person with a firm ideological or religious position (a Marxist, for what it's worth) who was prepared to listen and understand criticisms of his beliefs, and debate in an honest fashion. In every other case the ideologue has resorted to disingenous debate tactics - wilful ignorance, straw men arguments, red herrings, appeals to consequence, ignoring the strongest counter-arguments and focusing on the most contestable etc. It amazes me how seemingly intelligent people can make such deficient arguments when there is an emotional investment. Don't they have any intellectual pride?

  4. Nope. *Still* depends on the person. Most tyrants have true conviction and a sound ideology (if not what you'd call a moral ideology, but that's a value judgement), and they arn't exactly the most open to debate. Whereas other people with equally as fixed and sound ideologies are (several religious leaders will happily debate, - on the other side Dawkins debates, etc)

  5. If they don't want to force others, then yes.  If however they are more interested in power, they change the laws, create private armies, thugs and institutions (labor and death camps) to deal with those who "dare" oppose them.

At first, they are laughed at but then they become bold...and start killing others.

  6. Hey, I like to be questioned. I might be wrong, but I won't know unless you tell me.

  7. This can also go two ways.  There comes a time when the askers asks; the replier replies with what he/she believes in all their heart and knows with all their heart what they are replying is the truth; only to be cut down because they didn't reply with what the asker wanted to hear and or believed is their own truth.  The asker, also, to be fair should be open-minded when asking.

  8. I don't think so because people who think they have true convictions and sound ideologies think their belief system is the one and only correct one, regardless of what the convictions or ideologies are.  so, you could say people who have convictions and ideologies are not afraid to be questioned but that doesn't prove they're either true or sound.  Think Hitler (or the Pope if you're brave enough...)

  9. i dunno.  you would have to actually find somebody with true convictions and sound ideologies to test that theory.  and sadly they are few and far between.

  10. As long as the question is asked with openess and not an accusing manner. Some people just want to prove you wrong, but some people honestly want an answer. They want your answer, not the "right" answer.

  11. People with true convictions will ALWAYS welcome any debate that comes their way. The exchange of ideas is what matters..Only idiots shout, scream, and insist on a certain ideologyl  I'll be damned before I dismiss anyone out of hand

  12. That's right, they are not afraid to be questioned. But believing you have all the answers can get you into trouble when the difficult questions start rolling in. That's the problem with ideology.
