Is it true you can buy 500$ cars?

A friend of mine says she and her family have bought cars for roundabout 500$???? I've even seen ads for this on TV.

Is this for real? If so, where and how can I buy such a car?

Yes you can at government vehicle auctions.  However, depending on your luck you may get a good one or not.  But at the low price they are generally worth it.

junk or a scam

a good car cost $3k to $4,000

forget craigslist or ebay

and avoid auctions unless your a mechanic

That's true. They are mainly older model cars though. You can get them at a car auction.
