  1. Nope.

Contrary to popular belief, it was actually an Emu.  If you notice somewhere in the film (the scene infront of the old house) there is a peacock.  Both these birds, and others were borrowed from a zoo to make it seem like it was really outside.  It didn't really help much, but it did bring the whole "hanging munchkin" to popularity, and helped to promote the movie.

Something that is apparently weird is if you play some cd (I think it's a Pink Floyd cd) and you sync it up right, there are a lot of strange coincidences between the songs and the movie.

  2. I remember there is a scene where Dorothy, Tin Man and the Scarecrow have just met and then were attacked by Wicked Witch.  After the attack, the trio continue their journey on the yellow brick road.  During their dance down the road -- you can see, in the back ground, a figure.  -- it is the bird!!

"This next "blooper" is probably the most controversial and well known from the film. As Dorothy and her friends pass by the Tinman's cottage, it is "rumored" that one can see a Munchkin hanging in the background. While it is true that "something" can be seen here, it is NOT a hanging Munchkin, but rather a large bird; some say a crane. There were several large birds on loan for this scene from the Los Angeles Zoo and that is what you are seeing in this shot. So, tell all of your friends!

  3. I actually watched it tonight on TNT, and my mom had to rewind it to show me the scene. It looked like a bird, so me and my sis looked it up on the internet and it said that in the original version, it is a hanging munchkin, but they hid it in the edited version to a crane spreading its wings.

  4. No, see this link:

    Just urban legend.

  5. heres the real question...Why would people sit around and ask that?

  6. Yes. Or atleast it looked very much like it.

  7. I don't think so.  I checked into that and I'm pretty sure it ended up being false.  I had also heard it was a stage hand guy that accidentally hung himself.

  8. Yeah but some people think it is a bird.

  9. No, this is an urban legend. So are the stories about the munchkins getting drunk and having orgies.

One thing that is true is that in the first scene in Munchkin land you can see a "Mickey Mouse" ears shadow. This is a shadow of the boom camera. You can only see it if you are watching it in a theater.

  10. No. I remember discussing this in like 10th grade.

It's actually a bird spreading its wings.

  11. No. I looked into it. It's actually a bunch of crows. It's very convincing though.

  12. i was wondering the same thing.

  13. it was a bird some say an Emu but more likely a crane. if you watch the scene carefully after a few seconds you can see the Emu unfold it's wings

also for something like that to not be noticed by ANYONE is impossible. on set there were actors, cameramen, stagehands, lighting dudes, director, producer and lots others. and even IF one of these people did not notice at the time the scene would have had to go through preview, editing, soundifying, and eventually a remake.

so basically no dead munchkins or stage hands. only a hungry bird
