I am 16 and hoping to buy a car with the money I've saved up so I can look for a good deal now, but I've been told that I have to pay insurance on any car I buy even if its not on the road. I live in New York and I just want to know if this is true, and if it is, is there any way I could get out of it?

  1. you don't have too...it comprehensive...it would cover anything happening to it...my son had a sign fall on his..

  2. Depends on the State.  In my State, if you are a private owner and the car is registered, tags and insurance are required.  Most owners who do not tag their vehicles, have them in the driveway with a car cover over them or parked in the garage with the door down or stored at the rear of their property.

  3. You only have to have insurance if there is a lien against the car or if you drive it.  If you choose not to insure right away and someone smashes your parked car, you're just SOL.

  4. If you own the car then you don't have to.  If you finance, then the bank that owns the car will require you to have full coverage on it no matter what you do with the car.

  5. no you don't you can go to the tag office and you can get a black tag as thay call it but you are not allowed to drive the car until you get insurence.

  6. Devin M, For car insurance the fastest way to get a cheap quote is do a policy comparison. Be sure to choose the same coverage amounts, you can get an accurate quote to compare against others. Use the same zipcode, car make and model, mileage and driving history to make sure you get an apples to apples comparison. To get mulitple auto quotes, go to http://www.easyautoinsuranceguide.com/Ne... and you can compare the major auto insurance companies.

  7. If you finance it, insurance coverage must be on it at all times.

You should always keep car insurance valid.  Even if you car is parked someone could hit it, a tree limb falls on it, it could be vandalized or stolen.

  8. gotta have insurance to get a license plate & inspection sticker.

if there's a lien on it, the lender will require insurance.

    otherwise, nope, not required.
