  1. When you apply to renew your PR card, you will have to list all your absences from Canada in the last 5 years or since you became PR if it was less than 5 years ago.  Every vacation is counted.  If your total days away from Canada come up as more than 1095, you lose your PR.  There are exceptions where days outside of Canada are not counted, in case of your spouse being a citizen and you being with them or you working for a Canadian company in another country.

It is also possible to lose your PR before you have to renew your PR card.  If you come back to Canada after a long time away and they are suspicious that you have not been living there, they may give you a months notice to prove that you have been living in Canada or they will take your PR away.

  2. Living in Canada to keep PR status - you MUST live in Canada for 2 years WITHIN the LAST 5 years. And show proof of living in Canada as well. So yes it can be broken up. Short visits away from Canada for 3 months each year is ok. 6 months is also ok, but not advisable because you dont give yourself much leeway to keep within the requirements.

6 months in Canada, 6 months away - 1 year

6 months in Canada, 6 months away - 2 years

6 months in Canada, 6 months away - 3 years

6 months in Canada, 6 months away - 4 years

6 months in Canada, 6 months away - 5 years

Under this scenario, you have lived in Canada for 2 and a half years so you are eligible to keep the PR.

Also this scenario will NOT allow you to become a citizen.

  3. NO , it can't
