Is it typical now for kids to get fundraising stuff the FIRST WEEK of school?

Our 5 year old came home with a fundraising kit today - the end of the first week of school. What has this world come to? Is this typical?

When I was in school we did fundraising starting in middle school for our own class trip expenses, but not general fundraising for the school to benefit, and NOT at 5-years-old.

Probably not, BUT with the economy the way it is, maybe the school is just trying to get a head start.

5 year old fund raising..... yipes!  that IS hair raising!

yes, and the reason is that. the country is in recession, they are cutting down on their budget, especially on education. that's why the schools and the school PTA need financial help from parents.

i think we are lucky to have the choice of a free high quality education in this country. in my country we have to pay $700-$1000 for  quality education and we also need to compulsary buy books and school supplies which will cost another $100-200. plus, school field trips which cost $20-30.

in my opinion, i'm getting a good deal in the education system here, so a fundraiser is not a big deal. anyway, they're not forcing you to do it. it's your choice if you're going to help or not. it won't affect your child's grades.

but this is only my opinion, you are entitled to yours.

My niece came home with one too this week, her first week of school.  When I was in school it was usually around the first week of October.

The don't really send out things the first week because it isn't beneficial to them. They usually wait until September, however, if your child is a part of the elementary school and they do participate. Please remember that you do not have to sell anything. So, just because they send it home doesn't mean you have to sell it. When we first moved to this city the school had a fundraiser and we didn't know anyone there. Needless to say, we didn't sell anything.
