  1. are we short of women?

  2. Only in primitive societies.  Wars are fought over resources, and if you are in a group with a small population, women become more of an important resource.

  3. Governments don't need a reason to wage war-look at Bush and the US-his cronies just made stuff up and sent people to war. A shortage of women would be a great reason-and someone else is right-China has a huge shortage of women..

  4. No, wars are fought for many reasons. Only in endemic warfare would raids be carried out to capture women. Often, the primary causes are not apparent but every war is for some prize. Even wars with apparent religious motivations are actually about power. Violent conflict is about power and survival between different groups.

Monarchs sought to extend their power through war. The same goes for religious groups. The Crusades were started to consolidate the rising power of the Vatican. Modern "Jihad" is a reaction against the influence of the West over the Middle East. Leadership attempts to justify the war so people will fight and die for them. States use war as an extension of diplomacy. Wars are generally fought to improve the position of one group at the expense of another.

There are exceptions though governments do not use war as a way of eliminating excess males. In modern times, with long range bombers and intercontinental missiles, the women at home can be just as vulnerable as the men on the front.

  5. If so, keep an eye on China.

Wars are still fought over resources.
