Is it unsafe to use a stove that hasn't been used in over a year?

Is there any chance there would be something wrong with it if it hasn't been used for a period of time that long... If so what precautions should I take, besides cleaning it?

  1. gas or electric ?

    kept inside ?

well , electric would be fine if you cleaned it.

You may smell  debris anyway when you fire it up.

A gas stove has to be free of clogs. Spiders love to build in gas vents , be aware.

If there is a gas smell , don't use it.

    EDIT

If the oven doesn't have "gunk" on it from cooking DO NOT RUN THE clean cycle.

You don't need it for "dust". A few minutes at 400 will do.

  2. As long as nothing has crawled inside that can burn you are fine.

  3. Run it though a clean cycle,if it has one,and don't go far from the unit for 3 hours. Unless a bug or something got in there you are going to be fine. Worst case, it just will not work.
