  1. Depends how cold you mean, its better to train and race in cold water than hot, but not talking artic cold water


  2. Well, it depends how cold the water is. If it's bellow 70 degrees F, then your muscles will cramp up faster then normal temperature. There are cases of trained professional swimmers( royal marines) being caught in cold water, muscles cramping, and drowning. Don't worry though, because even though 70 degrees dosn't seem cold, for water it is; so basically   even though it may seem like its freezing cold, it's not.  Below 60 degrees hypothermia will kick in within 25 or so minutes depending on how well your body copes.   4. Uhm I'm not sure if it's really bad.

    I swim in the summer on a swim team and the water is always really cold in the beginning.  But I've never had any serious muscle injury, the water's just really cold...
