  1. Not unless they're of high value, such as the key dates in the Lincoln Cent or Walking Liberty Half Dollar series, or semi-key dates in high circulated grades (e.g. sharp VF through AU).  Some info on key dates in each series:

    The per-coin cost of certification - with a reputable grading and certification company, like NCG or PCGS - is quite high.  As for the cheaper "third tier" certification companies, I've seen bulk lots of common coins certified by those companies sell on eBay for not much more than their uncertified values.
