Question:

Is it worth driving this far to work?

I'm starting college next week and I'm looking for jobs. The only place that seems to hire is a favorite mall of mine that is about 20 minutes away and about 17 miles? Just for a minumum wage in retail and probably like 3 days out of the week. So basically it's like working to pay for the gas I used to drive there.

Would YOU work that far? Or would you look for somewhere closer? I know I might be exaggerating a little bit about the distance, but I just want people's opinions.

Thanks in advance.

  1. No... What a waste. Did you try the college services for employment opportunities ?

  2. I had a similar dilemma, and solved it by taking the Bus. It saved me $20 a week, and that adds up.

  3. If you need the job i'd say take it. Maybe you can find a carpool.

  4. I don't think it's worth it to work to pay for your transportation.  Remember that there are other costs to driving besides gas.  Unless you just want to do the job for fun, like a volunteer type of thing.

Also, there's no way you can drive 17 miles in 20 minutes.

  5. 17 miles seems a bit far for a retail part time job.  I would only be willing to travel that far if they would pay me more than minimum wage.

  6. With the price of gas going up up up, I would say it's generally not worth it. Unless you just want to get some experience.

I would keep looking, unless you have one of those cars that burns used grease from McDonald's

  7. It depends what you drive.  If you drive a fuel efficient car (ie: Civic, Focus) then it might be worth it if you really like the job.  Other than that, you're working minimum wage, take a bus.

  8. if you get work-study, you should definitely do it since its easy and it's right on campus. if you don't qualify for work-study, there is also student employment

  9. that is really not that far to drive. Why not try it out-you might just like it-
