  1. Well children under 5 actually don't have to pay for a fare so probably wait until the child reaches 5 then you both get discounts

  2. It's a bit confusing - the official website says you must have a child of 5-15 in the group, then says if the only child is below 5 then you can still buy a discount ticket for the adult! Read it and see what you think:

  3. If you want to travel cheaply then you must have both a family railcard and a child with you.

What the rules mean is this...no matter what age the child you can still purchase a cheap fare for yourself...but if your child is under 5 years of age you wont have to pay for them..but you must still ask for a ticket for them.

Rail tickets show # of adults traveling+# of children on same ticket and wether a railcard was used to purchase the ticket.

  5. A Travelcard is valid only in the London areas zone 1 to 6 and travel to and from destination if purchased from outside these zones.  Presumaby you mean a Family Railcard if you are travelling with a child anywhere.  Yes they are sometimes, not only will you get a discount on Saver and off peak tickets as long as you have the child with you and pay the minimum fare for them, you can use the discount card on other rail services as well.  However your travel will be restricted to being able to travel outside the peak times and you must take your child for discount.  Ask your local ticket sales clerk at your local station to give you some comparrisons and check for restrictions.
