Is it worth going from wpa to wpa 2?

I have 2 home laptops and 1 work laptop that all connect to my network using WPA. They are all capable of WPA2 but my router isn't. My router does everything else I need so would it be worth upgrading my router just to use WPA 2?

  1. In truth, for most of us, the difference is not overly important. What is important is what password you use! Here is a great article.  http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/art...

Both WPA and WPA2 offer good security. WPA is theoretically breakable, but can be secure on a practical level. With a strong password of 21 characters or more, a WPA network can withstand an attack for years. Unfortunately, most people don't use strong passwords.

In either WPA or WPA2, your password is the weakest link. Make it as strong as you reasonably can.

My method for password generation seems to work, I found it in an article somewhere on the web.. but

Take a sentance - make it up using numbers and words.

Like  "For secure WPA without WPA2 use a really good password 4 your system."  Then take the First letters of the words and the numbers and you have a good password.

FsWwW2uargp4ys   let a dictionary attack crack that?? sure in several YEARS with several computers working on it!

Sometimes we get overly nuts about wireless security. In your home the signal isn't reachable for very far outside the home so first, who's out there to "crack it" within that short range?  (The guy sitting in the car on the curb for hours and hours with his laptop would be a big clue!)  I suspect most of your neighbors have better things to do.  Even then its only within a 100 foot or so range. Take your laptop outside, check the coverage it isn't very far!
