Is it worth going to Reykjavik in September? Are there as many hotels and transport as during the summer?

I want to go to Iceland with my girlfriend in September but have heard travel and accomodation is severely limited. Does this also apply to Reykjavik or are things better here? Can you visit the nearby attractions (Geysir, Blue Lagoon etc) easily or do they shut down? Is it possible to see the Northern Lights from there or do you need to go further afield?
