I am gonna buy my brothers car off of him for $200 its a 96 dodge neon but the tranny is no good but i have a friends that can get a rebuilt one for $400 and put it in for $100. I need a car to last about 2 years until i can get outta school and buy a nice one lol. Should i spend the $700 for fix it. Also my dad has put at least $1500 into that car fixing random stuff on it and it has 123,000 miles

  1. No, it's a junky car and will put you in the poorhouse.

  2. i think it would be worth trying to fix that car,for the small amount of money that its going to cost you,i think you could make it a good car,if thats all that wrong with it,id make sure though that the transmission i was buying came with a warranty or something if not this could be the beginning of a lot of problems for you, those cars can get expensive to work on after a while,123 thousand isnt a lot of miles for a 96 model car,so it may be worth saving, just be careful and make sure thats all it needs, good luck with it.

  3. Speaking from personal experience, Neon's seem to be good until stuff starts to go - then it just doesn't stop. I would say you should stay away from older Neon's, especially if the mileage is that high and there has already been that much work put into it. Believe it or not, if you can find a Honda Civic in the same age range or even older, they will go forever!

  4. 1..you [or anyone else] can't get a rebuilt tranny for 400 dollars....maybe a junkyard/used one....2 when tranny or instal goes bad or price goes to 1200 dollars...you and your friends are gona be mad at each other...3 if you think 1500 is good price go ahead

  5. That depends.

What shape is the rest of the car in? Engine-body-interior-suspension-brakes-e... Are those things good? If those things seem solid then it might be worth it. But if not-i mean it would suck to sink a bunch of money into the transmission and then find out well it has a  issue with the engine or maybe the brakes and shocks/struts need replaced also.
